Epos is dedicated to bringing its customers the very finest music reproduction. In replacing the highly successful M series with the all-new Mi range Epos delivers improvements to clarity and definition, to give even more listening satisfaction.
Since its inception, Epos has represented the very best in loudspeaker engineering. The dictum of getting the individual parts inherently right mechanically and acoustically has always been at the core of Epos philosophy, so that crossover design is the final flourish rather than an exercise in ironing out imperfections.
Our woofer and mid range drive units have been designed to be as linear as possible, rolling off smoothly even before the crossover is added (smooth enough to require no electrical crossover in some models).
The Epos metal-dome tweeter is designed to be inherently free of dome break-up resonance. It incorporates an injection-moulded rubber suspension, with optimised damping. This avoids the supersonic high-frequency peak found in so many metal domes and imbues this tweeter with a clarity and sweetness which is decidedly non-metallic.
Cabinet construction has always been taken very seriously at Epos, with full vertical braces a hallmark from the beginning.
Another part of Epos philosophy has been ‘evolution, rather than revolution’. As a result, there are still clear threads of the original Epos concept running though current designs.
In the Mi series we have ‘evolved’ the M series and made what might appear, on the surface, to be small changes. In reality, though, every single part has been re-engineered, from woofers to cabinet, tweeter, crossovers, wiring and input terminals.
The woofers and mid-woofers have been improved through many subtle changes to cones, voice coils, surrounds and chassis. The tweeter now has a ‘silver’ anodised dome instead of the original gold dome and the frequency response is better extended at high frequencies, while retaining that Epos trademark smoothness and complete absence of unpleasant supersonic peaking.
Crossovers have been improved by using all-film capacitors in the mid and treble sections for improved clarity and naturalness. Wiring is still solid-core for the mid-woofers and tweeters in the two-way speakers, but for the three-way designs the woofer sections are now wired with heavy gauge solid core for even better bass control. Narrow gauge solid core is applied to the mid-range and tweeters where its cleaner, more natural sound is best suited. All connections, from input terminals to speaker tags, are now hand-soldered, for superior sound quality.
Input terminals are improved too. Mi models now have a smart, black-anodised, aluminium plate partnered with heavy touch-proof insulated binding posts. As before, all models can be multi-wired, but come with shorting links between sections.
The complete speakers now weigh more than before, but for good reason. Cabinets have been strengthened in the Mi range, with thicker front baffles and increased bracing, vertical in some cases and both vertical and horizontal in others. This attention to detail has reduced the cabinet colouration and contributes to improved bass definition and overall clarity.
Cosmetically, the Mi speakers look a million miles away from the previous M series. The front baffle grooves and large-radius edges are gone, replaced by small radii and smooth fronts. The sleek, modern, high-quality appearance is at last absolutely in keeping with their high sound quality. Cabinets are now manufactured in pairs, so that the hand-finished real wood veneers are book-matched in grain pattern from left to right. All Mi drive units are now embossed with the Epos logo and M series metal grilles have been replaced by stylish cloth covered ones. Visually these match most homes better and can of course be removed to show-off the attractive speaker fronts.
The floor-standing models now have permanently-attached black-sprayed plinths, which not only set the cabinets off nicely, but also have sturdy metal inserts to take adjustable floor spikes.
The upshot of all these changes is a totally new loudspeaker range in which there is something for everyone and improved music reproduction at each level: Epos loudspeaker evolution at its most effective.
